A government-run Indian boarding school followed from 1900 to its closure in 1932. Since 1936 the Tulalip Tribes has had its own tribal council and is currently self governing. Historically gaining sustenance from fishing, the Tulalips have profited most in recent years from their success in real estate and the casino business, which provide jobs primarily for tribal members. Today the Tulalip Reservation has a population of 9,000 (3,600 tribal members) and a land base of 22,086 acres.Įarly explorers and tribal elders left accounts of Indian villages in the Puget Sound region.
These were located along the rivers and bays, the connecting waterways for food, culture, and trade.
